The New Bedford Catholic Worker is a forming urban interfaith CW community that is fueled by the Holy Spirit and spearheaded by founder Kevin O'Sullivan. We exist here in NBMA, where my heart is seeking peace and justice in the spiritual traditions of the Catholic Worker.
My plans of the NBCW is to connect likeminded individuals located here in my corner of the world. Having had former mentors who were practicing radicals & anarchists who lived out versions of the CW that inspired me, I set out to try to imitate some of what I witnessed. With past mentors who were CW's, Senior Priests, Nonprofit Founders, Community Activists and or Business owners. I am a long-time/part-time volunteer in several areas such as urban gardening, food pantries, feeding programs, community centers, substance abuse recovery, fundraising, grant writing, activism and direct action. Past involvement include Mass Interfaith Worker Justice Round Table Claddagh Fund Saint Anthony of Padua Food Pantry Veterans for Peace Left Forum Labor Guild .
I live a sober, celibate and nonviolent life while being opposed to capitalism yet accountable, responsible and available to my family and community.
I have always tried to balance my duties as a family man who has done many jobs in order to earn a living. The scope and depth of these skills are varied and diverse. We live in an inner city apartment where we have raised our child, a flock of pets and too many houseplants to count. As many low income families we experience swings between feast & famine as we navigate wants and needs among at times unforgiving systems. To date we are locked in our yin/yang of fulfilling our fiscal responsibilities with philosophical ambitions bracketed by individual voluntary poverty. I help out where I can; occasionally while doing the works of mercy and seeking simplicity in a complicated world.
I occasionally travel while taking temporary vows of poverty; hopping freight trains and hitchhiking. I volunteer for supported causes/actions, visit CW communities and just exist as a witness of the struggles of our world. Sometimes, I take temporary contract jobs. Historically I have traveled for weeks to more and then return home to participate in limited capitalism while earning an income. Much of my adult life I have been a commercial fisherman but I have also worked in construction, logistics, doing graphic design and more.
